Safeguarding Policy

DrDavidCartland.com

Last updated: September 2026

1. Purpose and scope

DrDavidCartland.com is committed to treating clients with dignity, respect and fairness and to taking appropriate action where concerns arise that a person may be at risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation or serious harm.

Dr David Cartland provides services through DrDavidCartland.com in the capacity of a health coach. He is not currently registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), and the services provided through this website are not provided as GMC-regulated medical practice.

The health coaching service is delivered entirely remotely via Zoom. There are no face-to-face consultations, home visits or physical contact with clients.

The service is intended for adults aged 18 and over. Children and young people under 18 are not accepted as clients.

Health coaching does not replace medical diagnosis, treatment or emergency care. Clients should seek appropriate care from their GP, NHS services, emergency services or another suitably qualified healthcare professional where required.

1. Online nature of the service

Because all contact with clients takes place remotely, safeguarding concerns may arise from information disclosed during a Zoom session or through other communications associated with the service.

The absence of physical contact does not prevent safeguarding concerns from arising. A client may disclose abuse, neglect, exploitation, domestic abuse, coercive or controlling behaviour, or another situation in which they or another person may be at risk.

Where such concerns arise, they will be considered in accordance with this policy and the circumstances of the individual case.

1. Children and young people

DrDavidCartland.com does not provide health coaching to anyone under the age of 18.

If information is received during an online session indicating that a child or young person may be at risk of abuse or neglect, appropriate action may be considered, including contacting an appropriate safeguarding authority or the police where circumstances warrant this.

Current government safeguarding guidance applies to the protection of children both offline and online.

1. Adults at risk

Safeguarding concerns may also arise in relation to an adult who has care and support needs and who may be experiencing, or be at risk of, abuse or neglect.

Where appropriate, consideration may be given to contacting the relevant local authority safeguarding service or another appropriate organisation.

The Care Act statutory guidance recognises safeguarding responsibilities in relation to adults at risk and specifically acknowledges that safeguarding procedures may be relevant to organisations providing services online or by telephone.

1. Responding to concerns during a Zoom session

If a client discloses information indicating that they or another person may be at serious or immediate risk of harm, the situation will be assessed according to the information available at the time.

Where there is an immediate emergency, the client may be advised to contact the appropriate emergency service, normally 999 in the UK.

Where appropriate and lawful, information may be shared with the police, emergency services, local authority safeguarding services or another relevant organisation.

Because consultations are conducted remotely, DrDavidCartland.com cannot provide physical intervention or emergency assistance at a client's location.

Clients should therefore ensure that they contact emergency services directly whenever an immediate response is required.

1. Confidentiality

Information provided by clients will normally be treated as confidential.

However, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed where there is a serious safeguarding concern, a risk of serious harm, a legal requirement to disclose information, or another lawful basis for sharing information.

Where it is safe and appropriate to do so, the client will be informed before information is shared.

Only information reasonably necessary for the relevant safeguarding purpose will be shared.

1. Professional boundaries

The relationship between the health coach and client is a professional relationship.

The service does not involve physical examinations, physical treatment, home visits or physical contact with clients.

Clients will be treated respectfully and should not be subjected to intimidation, exploitation, discrimination or inappropriate behaviour through the service.

1. Scope of the service

The health coaching service is not an emergency service and is not intended to provide medical diagnosis or treatment.

Where a client's needs fall outside the scope of health coaching, they may be advised to seek appropriate assistance from their GP, NHS services, emergency services or another suitably qualified professional.

1. Record keeping

Where a significant safeguarding concern arises, a factual record may be kept of:

the nature of the concern;

information disclosed by the client;

relevant dates and times;

action taken;

advice or signposting provided; and

any information shared with another organisation and the reason for doing so.

Records will be stored securely and handled in accordance with the website's Privacy Policy and applicable data-protection requirements.

1. Review

This policy will be reviewed periodically and updated where necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or the services provided.

Consent & Referral Policy

DrDavidCartland.com

1. Purpose

This policy explains how consent is obtained when using the services provided through DrDavidCartland.com and how health-related referrals or signposting may be handled.

Dr David Cartland is a formerly GMC-registered doctor. The services provided through this website are not provided as NHS or GMC-registered medical services and are intended to provide health education, information, discussion and wellbeing support.

2. Consent

Before participating in a consultation or service, clients should understand the nature and purpose of the service being provided.

Participation is voluntary. Clients may ask questions before or during a consultation and may choose not to proceed with any particular discussion, recommendation or suggested course of action.

Information provided during a consultation is intended to support the client's understanding and decision-making. It does not replace assessment or treatment by a currently registered medical practitioner or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional where such care is required.

3. Health Information

Clients may choose to provide information about their health, medical history or circumstances during a consultation.

Health information is considered special category personal data under UK data-protection law and is handled with appropriate safeguards.

Only information reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose will be requested or used.

Further information about how personal information is collected, stored, used and protected is provided in our Privacy Policy.

4. Referrals and Signposting

Where appropriate, a client may be advised to contact another healthcare professional or service.

This may include recommending that a client:

contact their GP or another registered healthcare professional;

seek a specialist medical opinion;

arrange appropriate testing or investigation through a suitable provider; or

seek urgent or emergency medical assistance where circumstances indicate that this may be necessary.

Such recommendations are intended as signposting and do not constitute a formal NHS or GMC referral.

Where Dr Cartland is asked to pass information to another professional or organisation on a client's behalf, the client will normally be informed about what information is to be shared and the purpose for sharing it, and appropriate consent will be obtained where required.

5. Sharing Information

Personal information will not be shared with another person or organisation simply because a referral or signposting recommendation has been made.

Where information is to be shared, only information relevant and necessary for the stated purpose will normally be disclosed.

The legal basis for processing or sharing personal information will depend on the circumstances. Consent to a service and consent to the processing of personal information are separate matters under UK data-protection law.

Where explicit consent is relied upon for processing health information, it will be obtained through a clear affirmative statement and may be withdrawn, subject to any legal or other applicable limitations.

6. Emergency Situations

DrDavidCartland.com is not an emergency medical service.

If a client describes symptoms or circumstances that may require urgent medical attention, they will be advised to seek appropriate medical assistance.

In an emergency, clients should contact 999 or attend an appropriate Emergency Department.

7. Client Responsibility

Clients remain responsible for deciding whether to follow any information, recommendation or signposting provided.

Where medical diagnosis, treatment, prescription medication, investigation or other clinical care is required, clients should consult an appropriately qualified and currently registered healthcare professional.

8. Records

Where records are created as part of the service, they will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy and applicable data-protection requirements.

9. Review

This policy will be reviewed periodically and amended where necessary to reflect changes to the services provided, applicable legislation and data-protection requirements.
